Winter Count Screencast and Assignment

This webpage is a part of a four lesson learning environment on variables in science. The web tutorial I created for this page walks students through the process of designing their own controlled experiment. After watching the video students can choose from three different experiment situations in order to form a guiding question and design their own controlled experiment. This assignment allows students to pursue their own curiosities in order to engage in the scientific process and gain a richer understanding of variables.

Native American Groups Online Course

This is a six week mini course I created using Moodle. The social studies course covers different Native American regions and their culture. Throughout the course students are engaged in an interactive learning environment that uses videos, online discussions, group presentations, and assignments that are customized for each student through multiple options that students can choose from to demonstrate their learning.

Sun-Earth-Moon System Online Course

This mini course on the Sun-Earth-Moon System was created using Moodle. Students’ learning is assessed in varied ways throughout the course. Students begin and end the course with a multiple choice test created using Google Forums. Assignments and group discussions are also used for formative assessment during each week of the five week course. Another way students are assessed is by lessons created using Moodle. The lessons check for understanding by asking a multiple choice, true or false, or a short answer question intermittently.

In this screencast, students learn how the Sioux recorded their history using a Winter Count. Instead of students reading about Winter Counts, they watch the "Recording Sioux History" presentation that connects text to concrete examples allowing multiple learning styles to engage in the learning process. After watching the video, students are assigned to create their own Winter Count using their creativity to design symbols with meaning to their own lives.
